Korean Composers Night | A Collaboration with: Joo Won Park, Sang Song & Eun Young Lee

On September 11, 2015, mise-en will be hosting Acoustic #5 at our home studio location, MISE-EN_PLACE, situated in the heart of Bushwick. The concert will start at 8pm and will be featuring Korean composers, Joo Won Park, Sang Song, and Eun Young Lee. The composers will be individually premiering new works, who have each framed the classical repertoire in their unique way.

The ACOUSTIC+ series focuses on collaborative performances of new works for live performers and multimedia. The series’ concept is thus: for each concert, a NYC composer (selected from the academic and musical community of which ensemble mise-en is itself a part) curates a program of new electro-acoustic music for ensemble mise-en and him or herself.
“Quasi-Elegy”, a piece by New York City-based composer Sang Song, was written during our recent six composer residency with the I-Park Foundation during the month of August. Song’s piece is a kind of palimpsest that explores the idea of erased and distorted memories—with a personal twist. Eun Young Lee, who also completed the residency, is a full-time faculty member at the Boston Conservatory. Her piece consists of six movements, which will each focus on a recyclable element: air, soil, plastic, wood, glass and water, presented in nature and our daily lives.

Joo Won Park has a three-movement piece for the sextet and computer. He imagined that the ensemble members were characters in an RPG game and wanted to provide weapons and armors to make them stronger, faster, and enchanted. The computer part uses “classic” synthesizer sounds that are often used in early game consoles. He will also play a series of original compositions for a solo electronic musician. In addition to the computer, the pieces will use mbira, slinky, windup toys, no-input mixer, custom synthesizer, phone tap, tying fork, and other lovely-sounding objects. Online magazine Disquiet described one of his pieces as the following: “In the hands of [then] Philadelphia-based Joo Won Park, the no-input mixer is less a matter of singing than full-on, tantrum-level glossolalia, a heavy gurgle of electric fissures. Up above is Park’s October 1402 (for no-input mixer and computer), which at times sounds like an arcade game on its last legs, and at others like freakazoid hardcore free jazz improvisation.”
