ACOUSTIC+ #6b
BEFORE THE EUROPEAN TOUR (Part 2)

Thank you to everyone who came out to our revised program of ACOUSTIC+ 6a: BEFORE THE EUROPEAN TOUR (Part 2) last Friday! We held an extremely successful concert, despite the last minute change of music. We are happy to announce that the original program will be performed this coming Monday, October 19th, 2015 @ MISE_EN PLACE Bushwick. Please join us for ACOUSTIC+ 6b | BEFORE THE EUROPEAN TOUR (Part 2), which will feature the following program:

PROGRAM
Frederic Rzewski: Spots (1986)* (#3, #7, #13)
Frederic Rzewski: 96 (2003)
Frederic Rzewski: Moonrise with memories (1978)
Keeril Makan: Becoming Unknown (2009)
Daniel Fishkin: Composing the Tinnitus Suites: 2011 (mise-en transcription) (2015)
Moon Young Ha: (in)stillness (2015, world premiere)
Pascal Le Boeuf: Antithesis for ensemble (2015)

*Spots was designed to be inserted between other compositions, similar to how commercials play during a TV show. Therefore, we will not list Spots’ individual movements, as they will act like commercials between the other pieces on the program.

The concert will start at 8pm and will feature compositions in preparation for the ensemble mise-en European tour. The European tour is from October 22-30, and ensemble mise-en will be going to Sweden, Lithuania (GAIDA Festival), and Latvia (ARENA Festival). This concert will feature the works of world renowned Frederic Rzewski, one of the most consistent, creative personalities of the last few decades. His compositions will include “Moonrise with Memories”, “96 : canon for five instruments”, and a thirteen minute piece, “Spots”.

In addition, Keeril Makan presents us with “Becoming Unknown”, a commission by the Fromm Foundation for Music and the Harvard University Department of Music. “Becoming Unknown” opens with piercing wind dissonances, gradually dissolving into sparse, inquisitive interplay between bass flute, bass clarinet and double bass. Enda Bates will present “Echo Game”, an open-form piece devised as a sort of game in which the musicians attempt to echo and reproduce complex (and sometimes detuned) multiphonic tones that are freely chosen by the wind instruments. Harmonies that are derived from multiphonics are a recurring interest of Bates and inspired him to create a scenario which encourages the musicians to explore and develop these strange, but often quite beautiful, textures. The evening finishes of with our very own Moon Young HA’s new piece, “(in)stillness” for bass flute, bass clarinet, trombone, piano, violin and contrabass.

This season’s ACOUSTIC+ series focuses on collaborative performances of new works for live performers with or without multimedia components. The series’ concept is thus: for each concert, a New York City composer (selected from the academic and musical community of which ensemble mise-en is itself a part) curates a program of new music for ensemble mise-en and him or herself.

Tickets will be available at the door and can be purchased for $20 general admission or $15 for students and seniors.
