On Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at 8pm, ensemble mise-en will be launching a new soloist project in which members from the ensemble have the opportunity to curate their own concerts. Join us at our home studio, MISE-EN_PLACE Bushwick, for a concert featuring the solo performances of pianist Yumi Suehiro and guest violinist Takao Hyakutome. The concept of a solo artist series was created by Moon Young Ha, the artistic and executive director of mise-en, and the core members of ensemble mise-en.

While typically performing as an ensemble, the SOLOIST series allows the individual members of ensemble mise-en an opportunity to express and perform their instrumental talent while pushing their musical limits outside their comfort zone, making this project truly experimental. It is a dynamic element mise-en feels is important in the continuous development of each musician, especially in the re-examining of classical orchestral compositions. We wish to promote a discourse between musical audiences and the understanding of the radical effects soloists have on the musical language and how these effects can often promote the discovery of new and extended instrumental techniques of sound.

The first SOLOIST series concert features Yumi Suehiro, a Japanese pianist and percussionist. Ms. Suehiro graduated magna cum laude from Lehman College, where she received a B.S. in music. She studied percussion with Morris Lang, who was the associate principal timpanist and percussionist in New York Philharmonic, and composition with John Corigliano. She has been featured as both a piano and marimba soloist–performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Nesauro’s Marimba Concerto–in the Lehman College Community Band. Ms. Suehiro later received an M.M. in classical piano performance where she studied with Zenon Fishbein and Peter Vinograde. She will be performing three pieces: Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera by Luigi Dallapiccola, Suite No. 10 by Giacinto Scelsi, and Sequenza IV by Luciano Berio.

Takao Hyakutome, born in Sapporo, Japan, started violin lessons at the age of 4. Throughout his career, he has won several prizes at international competitions and is now a solo violinist and violist. Mr. Hyakutome will be playing works from two different composers: Figures of Disorder by Mateu Malondra, and LA CHAMBRE NOIRE by Joan Bages i Rubi.

Tickets will be available at the door and can be purchased for $20 general admission or $15 for students and seniors. Your ticket will also include a complimentary drink.
